Why Premium Feels More at Home

Octane does not tell you how much energy is inside the fuel. It shows how well the gasoline resists unwanted combustion inside the engine. This matters in turbocharged engines because air is pushed into the engine under pressure.

Higher octane fuel gives the engine more room to work as intended. The difference may be noticed during quick acceleration, hot weather, heavy loads or long highway climbs. Alfa Romeo states that 91 octane or higher supports optimal performance in its 2.0 litre engine. Regular gasoline can still provide satisfactory operation when 87 is listed as the minimum.

What the Giulia and Stelvio Take

The Canadian manuals for the 2.0 litre Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio list 87 octane as the minimum grade. Both recommend 91 octane for stronger performance. This makes premium the sensible everyday choice for drivers who want the responsive feel these vehicles were designed to provide.

Using regular gasoline is still within the stated requirement for these engines. However, premium may help the engine feel more responsive when passing, accelerating or driving under a heavier load.

What About the Alfa Romeo Tonale?

The 2.0 litre Tonale can use high quality unleaded regular gasoline rated at 87 octane. Its manual also explains that 91 octane or higher helps the engine reach optimal performance. The benefit may be easier to notice in warm weather or when the vehicle is carrying more weight.

Fuel needs can vary between engines and model years. Owners of a Quadrifoglio model, an older Alfa Romeo or a vehicle from another market should check the manual rather than follow a general rule.

Regular Went In by Mistake. Now What?

When 87 octane is listed as the minimum, filling the vehicle with regular gasoline meets the stated requirement. You may simply notice less eager performance than you would receive with premium.

When your specific vehicle requires premium, a lower grade should not be used. Check the manual before continuing if you are unsure. Heavy knocking, warning lights or unusual engine behaviour should be inspected by an authorized service department.

Choose Good Fuel, Not Just the Right Number

Alfa Romeo recommends quality unleaded gasoline. TOP TIER detergent fuel is encouraged when it is available because its additives can help limit deposits inside the engine and fuel system.

The documented 2.0 litre engines can accept gasoline containing up to 15 per cent ethanol. E85, gasoline containing methanol and fuel with more than 15 per cent ethanol should be avoided. These fuels may cause starting problems or damage important components.

Winter Does Not Change the Label

Cold Ontario weather can increase fuel consumption, but it does not normally change the required octane grade. Use the fuel shown on the label and in the manual throughout the year.
